Governance for AI-Assisted Client Work

M.CQ Ventures helps professional-service firms turn informal AI use into documented, defensible operating practice.

Most firms using AI do not have a tool problem first. They have a visibility, review, approval, and accountability problem.

AI is already shaping drafting, research, analysis, internal documentation, and client-facing work. In many firms, that usage expands faster than standards, ownership, and records.

M.CQ Ventures identifies where AI is active, where exposure sits, and what controls must be installed so leadership can explain how AI-assisted work is produced, reviewed, and approved.

The firm's practice is aligned with ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and the governance obligations defined in ABA Formal Opinion 512 — the guidance that ties AI use to attorney duties of competence, confidentiality, supervision, and billing integrity.

The Firm

What M.CQ Ventures Does

M.CQ Ventures is a governance-first advisory practice focused on AI use inside real workflows.

The firm helps leadership teams answer the questions that matter under scrutiny:

  • Where is AI being used?
  • Which workflows are affected?
  • What data is exposed?
  • Who reviews the output?
  • Who approves it?
  • What is documented?

The work is fixed-scope, operational, and built for firms that need AI-assisted delivery to be visible, accountable, and defensible.

Every engagement produces a custom Agent Skill deployed to your firm's internal repository. That file enforces your AI governance rules inside the tools attorneys use every day — Claude, Copilot, ChatGPT, Gemini — so policy runs automatically, not only in memory.

Engagements are led directly by the founder. No junior pass-through. No subcontracted deliverable.

Advisory built from operational reality — not policy theory.

Robert Millhouse built M.CQ Ventures on a single observation: professional-service firms are deploying AI inside live client workflows faster than they are building the governance infrastructure to defend that deployment.

His advisory lens is operational. Where does work actually move? Where does risk accumulate without documentation? What must be standardized before scale increases exposure beyond what leadership can explain or defend?

That perspective shapes every engagement. The goal is not open-ended commentary. The goal is to give leadership a clear view of current AI usage, governance gaps, workflow exposure, and the operating standards required to strengthen control — delivered as a fixed-scope, document-backed record.

The GRID Control™ framework and every proprietary methodology deployed by M.CQ Ventures was developed from this operational foundation. The work is not theoretical. It is institutional.

Robert's work is focused on building defensible AI governance systems that can withstand procurement audits, insurance underwriting, and M&A diligence — not tool-level optimization, but the design of documented, human-oversight-led control layers around AI-assisted client work.

Market Context · May 2026

Governance is no longer optional infrastructure.

On May 12, 2026, Anthropic released Claude for Legal — a public repository of pre-built AI workflows targeting contracts, privacy, employment, litigation, intellectual property, and regulatory monitoring inside law firms.

The release ships with a dedicated AI governance plugin. The vendor confirmed, in code, that governance is a billable practice vertical — not a compliance checkbox.

At the same time, 43% of law firms have no AI policy, and only 9% actively enforce one. Enterprise-grade AI is now pre-bundled into firms that have no scaffolding around it.

The guardrails inside the tool do not satisfy attorney duties under ABA Formal Opinion 512 or D.C. Bar Ethics Opinion 388. Competence, confidentiality, supervision, and billing integrity remain the firm's obligations — and they require a documented governance layer that sits above the tool.

Unmanaged AI is operational risk. The record is the defense. If it can't be shown, it can't be defended.

Scope

What M.CQ Ventures Is Not

What We Are Not What We Do
A generalist agency Governance-first advisory — defined scope, fixed fee, documented output
A freelance writing shop Review, approval, and workflow standards for AI-assisted client work
A software vendor Operating model and control design — no tools sold, no software recommended
A compliance certifier Governance implementation guidance built on ISO/IEC 42001:2023, ABA Formal Opinion 512, and Heppner-style discovery risk
Open-ended consulting Fixed-scope, decision-ready engagements with a defined deliverable and timeline

Undocumented AI-generated outputs are potential discovery risk — not just an internal policy concern. The Heppner-style logic that establishes that risk is the operating framework behind every engagement.

The question is not whether AI is in your firm.
It is whether it is documented.
